About Livewire

Livewire is a messaging app for Ubuntu Touch, designed for getting started quickly and ease of use. It's compatible with any provider that uses XMPP, the open standard for instant messaging. Sign up at your provider of choice, or even host your own, and start chatting with family and friends.

Features:
* End-to-end encrypted messaging.
* Join and talk on public channels on a worldwide network.
* Push notifications.
* A simple UI, designed for ease of use.

Livewire is alpha-quality software. See the repository for the development roadmap.

Notable missing things:
- Handling network switching.
- Audio/video calls (that will come much later).
- Proper public channel search.

Recent Changes

The infra XEP update: various foundational XEPs, bug fixes to end-to-end encryption, more core XMPP features.

Changelog:
- Partial XEP-0106 (JID escaping) support.
- Load messages instantly instead of waiting for online status.
- Parse downloaded VCFs to show contact info inline.
- A bunch of fixes to latent OMEMO legacy issues that could leave sessions poisoned or frozen.
- More consistent connection/presence indicator meanings (unfilled instead of red for MUC + user offline, and red now for contact Do Not Disturb).
- Fix push helper potentially getting stuck (and thus breaking push notifications) when trying to process pending read markers/retractions/edits.
- Move Moderate Message action to leading actions for consistency with self-delete.
- Fix push helper invisible chained executions hogging the lock, preventing the main app from reconnecting.
- New Message Info page that shows more information.
- Show who has read a specific message in a MUC, visible in message info.
- New data usage + local analytics page.
- Update privacy policy and force re-accept.
- Add the ability to manage presence (online/away/dnd) under Provider Info.
- Fix nick highlighting when we have explicit mention metadata (i.e. pick the right nick).
- Implement XEP-0424 message retractions.
- Implement XEP-0425 message moderation.
- Implement XEP-0478 Stream Limits Advertisement.
- Implement XEP-0411 Bookmarks Conversion.
- Implement XEP-0469 Bookmark Pinning.
- Implement XEP-0166 contact roster sharing: share XMPP contacts.
- Allow connecting via direct TLS when available (XEP-0386, partial).
- Add connection type, stanza limit size, stream management timeout info to provider info page.
- Implement all remaining avatar XEPs (completion of XEP-0084, implementation of XEP-0486, XEP-0153).
- Fix issues with Message Displayed Synchronization during MAM replay, which also led to fixes for race conditions regarding edits and other non-message stanzas.
- Collapse share buttons into only 3 (that have distinct needs).
- OMEMO 2: Make sure the entire stanza is actually encrypted.
- Set Client State Indication (XEP-0352) to inactive whenever app is in background, to reduce data use when running unsuspended.
- New setting: do not connect on metered networks (or rather, what we think is probably a metered network).
- New setting: do not automatically download files on metered networks (or rather, what we think is probably a metered network).

While it is still alpha, it is snappy and works for omemo encrypted chats. 👍
